American Food & Beverage

American Food & Beverage, Buckhead

Creative Loafing has yet to steer me wrong. It reviewed American Food & Beverage back in the Spring and it has since been on my short list. Tom & I went one Saturday night with another couple that also loves food (what are the odds?). The décor is clean and bar the main attraction. The cocktails were delicious I had the gin gimlet and the old-fashioned coke-tale. The menu was not extensive but nothing sounded or looked bad. Our table ordered the burger, the turkey sandwich, braised pork shoulder with grits, and fried chicken with collards and a biscuit with apple butter. The burger was the clear winner. Holman & Finch can move over as there is a new burger in Buckhead. I can’t really put my finger on it but the burger was saltier all the while not killing you with sodium overload. The desserts were also surprising. They make their own ice cream and no I’m not just talking about strawberry or chocolate. The flavors that night were corn with chocolate ganache, Sauvignon blanc with citrus  marmalade, and watermelon with tomato compote and a basil base. We also ordered the peach profiteroles which were like the month on July in cloud form. The whole night was great until it took forty-five minutes to get the check and then walking up to my car to find not one but two boots on my car. Who did they think I was MacGyver? Two boots were really unnecessary. Before the night I was super excited about the prospects for a fun new restaurant in Buckhead but it may take a while for the sting of waiting for the check and two boots to wane.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream, The Westside

Of course I would be the one to be writing about ice cream and its deliciousness after the second wave of the polar vortex. I am not a seasonal eater of ice cream, I like to think of myself of as a true fan thus I indulge in ice cream year round. While Jeni’s ice cream is originally from Columbus, Ohio it is slowly expanding to more states. One of its most recent locations is in Atlanta and I couldn’t be more happy. I started eating Jeni’s while in college but once I left Ohio it was nowhere to be found. Distance definitely makes the heart grow fonder.

I went late on a week night as I didn’t want to be rushed in picking flavors, good decisions take time. My go to is The Buckeye State, which is peanut butter ice cream with pieces of dark chocolate. However, since this was my first time in a scoop shop I thought it was best to taste around. I tried the Egg Nog & Salted Caramel but I ended up getting  a scoop of the following three: Black Coffee, Brown Butter Almond Brittle, & Dark Chocolate. While I didn’t plan on all going together they complemented each other pretty well!

The store is small but it has excellent ice cream, coffee from Atlanta’s own Batdorf & Bronson, and wonderful service. The store is also open til 11pm so no need to have the early bird special if you want to go here for dessert.

Jake’s Ice Cream

Jake’s, Inman Park

I don’t eat as much ice cream as I would like and since that is the case I don’t like eating bad ice cream. Luckily I have friends with the same sentiment! Jake’s is located in a sort of co-working space for restaurants. There is a burritos place, a coffee joint, a breakfast & lunch spot and finally the ice cream corner. A very cool idea, with wi-fi & comfy chairs to boot! Jake’s has multiple flavors on their website but not all are available everyday, meaning all flavors are fresh! And since you will probably be wondering about two or three flavors they don’t care that you ask for multiple samples, I always appreciate good customer service. The two flavors I was between was diesel fuel a chocolately coffee ice cream and the red velvet no explanation necessary. I ended up going with Diesel Fuel and I made the right choice! Although I could be back soon to either try the red velvet or the vanilla malt. Yes, you can always run to your local Publix and pick up a carton of whatever but I challenge you to raise your standards and head over to Jake’s for a quality scoop!
